It was distantly followed by Australia (13K tons), South Korea (12K tons), the Philippines (8.5K tons), China (7.5K tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (5K tons), together achieving a 51% share of total imports. Vietnam (3.8K tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Japan increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2013 to 2024. At the same time, the Philippines (+23.9%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+10.9%), South Korea (+10.5%), Australia (+8.4%), Vietnam (+4.3%) and China (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +23.9% from 2013-2024. While the share of the Philippines (+7.8 p.p.), South Korea (+5.4 p.p.), Australia (+3.6 p.p.) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2013-2024, the share of China (-2.3 p.p.) and Japan (-4.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Japan ($142M) constitutes the largest market for imported preparations for oral or dental hygiene in Asia-Pacific, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($67M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 10% share.

From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value in Japan stood at +3.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (+9.3% per year) and South Korea (+11.1% per year).

Import Prices By Country

In 2024, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $5,448 per ton, reducing by -6.3% against the previous year. Over the last eleven years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $5,816 per ton in 2023, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($5,330 per ton), while Vietnam ($3,172 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, exports decreased by -1.5% against 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at 126K tons in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dental hygiene preparations exports totaled $492M in 2024. In general, exports saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2024 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports By Country

Thailand (54K tons) and China (54K tons) prevails in exports structure, together constituting 87% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Korea (5.9K tons), mixing up a 4.7% share of total exports. Japan (3.5K tons) and Malaysia (2.7K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Japan (with a CAGR of +20.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($277M) remains the largest dental hygiene preparations supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($89M), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 4% share.

From 2013 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled +15.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+1.3% per year) and Malaysia (+2.6% per year).

Export Prices By Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $3,958 per ton in 2024, waning by -6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a mild expansion from 2013 to 2024: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, dental hygiene preparations export price decreased by -31.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 77%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $5,770 per ton. From 2020 to 2024, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2024, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($7,168 per ton), while Thailand ($1,650 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
